In our preliminary conversations with wounded and disabled veterans, we find that veterans still want a mission. They have served and want to continue to serve. Yet many of them are unsure of how to continue their service. They feel respected by their communities, yet disconnected from public leaders, public institutions, and organizations working on pressing problems. As a community, we have said to them, “Thank you for your service.” What we have not said is, “We still need you.”

Many of them possess twin strength: not only have they led in combat roles overseas, but many of them have developed the strength that comes with learning to overcome and live with a disability. We believe that by engaging veterans in continued service at home, we can lay the groundwork for the next generation of Citizen Leaders that will help to positively shape our community.

In order to help foster such leadership and encourage participation at all levels of the community, we will work with veterans, volunteers, and students to identify community challenges and devise solutions together.

Some young veterans we have spoken with have envisioned themselves sitting down at a table to work on a literacy program with a juvenile in trouble in the justice system. Others have envisioned serving as coaches with the mentally handicapped, and still others have thought about working on physical therapy programs with the elderly.

We will create the infrastructure necessary to build a sustainable model for veterans to connect with youth, community organizations, and other leaders to address needs in our community. We will host community meetings, generate publicity, and pay for the first few veterans to spend three months of 2008 working full-time as Citizen- Leaders in the community.
